Hey, I’m Keira, I just made the move to Basel to work as a Host at Hyve Hostel, and let me tell you—this city is a total vibe. Basel is like a perfect blend of history, creativity, and energy, and exploring it is an absolute blast.
I got here at the end of last year, so I’m gearing up for my first Basel summer—something everyone keeps telling me is unreal. But even in winter, I’ve already found my favorite spots to eat, drink, party, and soak up art.
And it seems that in 2025 Basel is the place to be. With Eurovision in May, Art Basel in June, and the first UEFA Women’s World Cup matches in July, Basel is basically the cultural hotspot in Switzerland this year.
At Hyve, we get all kinds of travelers—backpackers, VIPs, you name it—which means I’m always meeting new people and sharing my insider tips. So, if you’re planning to visit Basel soon, here’s the lowdown on my must-see spots....
Where to Eat in Basel
If I weren’t a hostel host, I think I’d be a food tour guide—there’s just so much good food in this city! Here are five places I keep coming back to:

Dan’s Lab – The best sandwiches in town, the friendliest staff, and a super cozy atmosphere
Daniska – Hands down, Basel’s best matcha spot. They always have creative, seasonal flavors
Klara – A food hall with plenty of options, perfect when you don’t know what you’re in the mood for
Bon Gout – Best. Pide. Ever. That's all I have to say
Sapori del Sud – A tiny, family-run Italian takeaway serving up homestyle meals. The owner is every Italian stereotype in the best way possible, and his recipes come straight from his mom. Grab your food and head to the nearby botanical garden for a scenic meal.
How I Find Art in Basel
Of course, Basel is known for its world-class museums. The Fondation Beyeler is an obvious recommendation—but it’s popular for a reason.
Beyond the museums, I love exploring alternative art spaces and underground exhibitions run by local creatives. The best way to stay updated? Instagram. Here are three artists I follow who inspire me and keep me in the loop:

🎨 @mariematusz - incredible sculptural installations, her work speaks for itself. Take a look, it will leave you speechless.
🎨 @alienboij - one thing about me I love fantasy and fine line art. Dario has a way of mixing it so perfectly. I'm a huge fan of his work and I'm grateful to have a piece of his artwork on my body.
🎨 @gg_gothic - not only the sweetest person I have the pleasure of knowing but also has such a unique stand-out style that is non-conformist and unapologetic and that’s what I think art is all about.
Other great ways to discover art in Basel
822 Showroom - Creative space showcasing some of the local fashion scene, they do exhibitions, pop-ups, you name it.
Kunsthalle - A classic, you’ll always find great exhibitions there. If you want more art museum recommendations find our favoruties here.
Basel Art Summer Camp: during the week of Art Basel, Hyve hostel turns into a creative hub with a pop-up gallery, affordable art shop, and a lineup of workshops, making it the perfect spot to stay, experience art beyond the fair and hang out with emerging artists!

Where to Drink & Go Out in Basel
Whether you’re looking for a cozy cocktail bar or a lively club, these are my top picks:
🍸 Rouine – Great vibe, lovely staff, and a backroom that hosts some of the best DJs in town.
🍸 KaBar – A laid-back spot with outdoor seating—perfect in the summer!
🍸 Flore – If you’re into fancy cocktails, this place is for you. Think New York jazz club meets expert mixologists.
Basel’s Music Scene – What to Listen to & Where to Go
The music scene here is one of the best parts about Basel, these are some of the names shaping it right now:
🎵 Somatic Rituals
🎵 Groto
🎵 Interpolar
🎵 Mykki Blanco

For live music and DJ nights, I always check out Rouine first, Elysia sometimes has good DJs, or Renée if you're looking for a more ‘’chilled’’ club setting. In the Summer make sure to check out the Hafen! There's a cluster of small bars and ‘’pop-up’’ clubs along the Rhein that get lit up at night and create a nice atmosphere. For example Landestelle or Marina.
Basel might not be the biggest city in Switzerland, but it’s got more surprises than you’d expect. Whether you're here for a weekend getaway or settling in for the season, there’s always something new to uncover.
